"Some Mormons stocking up amid fears that doomsday could come this month."

Mixing a brew of biblical prophecies, the Hebrew calendar, a volatile economy, world politics, a reported near-death experience and astronomical occurrences, hordes of Utahns have become convinced that calamitous events are imminent — maybe by month's end — and are taking every precaution. . . At American Fork's Thrive Life, which sells mostly freeze-dried food, sales have shot up by "500 percent or more in the past couple of months," says customer- service representative Ricardo Aranda. "There is a sense of urgency, like something is up. A lot of people are mentioning things about September, like a financial collapse."

I love the way the article presents this as a peculiarly Mormon thing. Because nobody else is feeling uneasy about the way things are going, or stockpiling survival supplies, or making plans to escape the fall of civilization. Only particularly wacky Mormons do stuff like that.

I'm a Mormon, in Utah (a transplant, not a native), and I'm not panicking. Just life as normal. I check my stocks that I have in my basement, and buy what I'm low on as necessary. And this is the same for all my local neighbors. No one has come up to me and started exclaiming, "The sky is falling". This has been a "Mormon" practice for decades, to have a supply of food, fuel, clothing, blankets, water, medicines and medical supplies, etc, on hand in case of emergency and need. The "need" most often cited is loss of a job, nothing earth shattering there.
So what is this author's point, again (besides the one on top of his/her head)?

A caution on the source: the Salt Lake Tribune is very antagonistic towards mormons. That's not to say Utah isn't a wacky place - it is. But the Trib has long twisted things to put mormons in the worst light possible. A grain of salt (more like a pound) is always required when the Trib is involved.

Although given their track record for preparedness, making friends with a mormon before the end comes is maybe not such a bad plan... :-)

My cleaning lady here in Florida has been muttering End-Timey stuff for about three months now, constantly pointing to the mid-to-late-September time frame.

I can't get excited. If I'm meant to survive, I will; if I'm not, I won't.

Tempest in a teapot being stirred by the Trib. There have been a few people expressing interest in the 'September Meltdown' in my Facebook feed, but, I haven't seen the hyperbole the newspaper is pushing. Those that are paying attention are already prepared. Those that aren't prepared are unlikely to suddenly decide to change their habits because of Facebook or a SL Trib article. Anon 8:02 is right, further, this article is full of baitwords for people who like to mock Mormons for being tradition bound instead of 'properly progressive'.

Some members of The Church of Political Correctness of Latter-Day Saints ("The Mormons") claim that "when the time comes" they will take heroic action to "save the Constitution." Yet they tolerate their own leadership threatening them with criminal prosecution for exercising their Second Amendment rights at churches paid for with their own tithing money (http://www.deseretnews.com/article/590038317/Text-of-letter-from-First-Presidency-on-guns.html), they officially endorse a treasonous pro-amnesty document that was funded by George Soros (http://www.newswithviews.com/Johnson/karen102.htm), they elect "Gadianton robbers" like Gary Herbert (anti-2A), Orrin Hatch (DREAM Act author, voted to support Loretta Lynch), etc. to public office, and they're gradually endorsing the homosexual agenda while claiming they're not (http://www.mormonsandgays.org/). All this for a few (billion) pieces of silver (tax-exempt status). Oh, and then there's this little neocon gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anYhNLWGItw (Notice the date of the speech for historical context.)

So good for Julie Rowe, but she may find that her fellow parishioners contributed to the circumstances for which she's preparing. The Mormons have some serious introspection to do.

I posted this elsewhere but, in case anyone missed it, here goes;

If you have supplies stashed at home, make sure to go to government relief centers.

Not going to relief centers is a huge flag and may cause unwanted curiosity.

Mormons I know always had a huge stock of food, this is their standard operating procedure.

Blake posted about going to the relief centers...well I think he is right, its about maintaining appearances (becoming the Grey man, you have to blend in), just dont get in any lines to get on buses or trains, or for vaccinations, unless you really really want to. Remember, they are from the government and just here to "help"(for those who forget Katrina and Rita)......

You have really got to laugh . The most popular TV show is Walking Dead . The most popular books are the Hunger Games Trilogy with 300 million copies sold . The most popular movie will be the final installment of Hunger Games , with the young lady's fondest desire is to put an arrow in President Snow's heads . We have had 100 million firearms sold in the last seven years , even though we are in a deep recession . Presidential frontrunner's Donald and Bernie want to burn Washington DC down . And what do we get from the font of wisdom of the Salt Lake Tribune ? A few Mormons buying more wheat . Sorry, it's a lot bigger than that.
